Poe, an inventive and creative man, published a collection of his poems, at only the age of eighteen, and throughout his life published many poems which was revolutionary at the time to the field of writing. His immense description in horror and detective stories were radically different than many of those at his time, and made people eventually crave for his next stories. The Tell-Tale Heart, a short story, was published in 1843. The Cask of Amontillado, was published in 1846. The Masque of the Red Death, was published in 1842. The Raven was published in 1845. It was not until The Raven that Poe became a household name. He would draw huge crowds from lecturing, and from this his public fame started to grow. People flocked to see him, and read other publications that he wrote. Because of the many appearances he had in many renowned magazines and books, his fame started to grow, yet he still remained relatively poor. According to the Edgar Allan Poe Museum, “ For the publication of his first book of short stories, Tales of the Grotesque and Arabesque, he was only paid with twenty-five free copies of his book.“
