In 1815, the Allan family sailed to Britain, where Poe was enrolled at a grammar school in Irvine, Scotland, the place where his foster father had been born. After rejoining the family in London in 1816, he studied at a boarding school in Chelsea until the summer of 1817. Subsequently, he entered at the Reverend John Bransby's Manor House School at Stoke Newington, a suburb north of London. However, in 1820, the Allan family moved back to Richmond, Virginia, where Poe then enrolled at the University of Virginia to study ancient and modern languages. However, while there due to lack of money from his foster father, he was unable to continue his education, and decided to join the U.S. Army for money as a private. On May 26th, 1827, Poe was sent to the First ARtillery and soon became the highest rank of a non-commissioned officer of Sergeant Major. After serving for two years, left the army and tried to amend relationships with John Allan by going to West Point Academy.
